What Skimkit does
Skimkit is a browser extension that shows the transcript of the YouTube video you are watching and, when you ask, writes a summary of it or answers a question about it. It runs only on www.youtube.com. There is no account and no sign-in.
Transcripts are read in your browser
- Skimkit reads the captions YouTube's own player downloads in your browser. Viewing, searching, copying or saving a transcript happens entirely on your device; the transcript is never sent to us.
- Summaries you create are saved in your browser's extension storage so they open again without counting against your allowance. You can delete them in Skimkit's settings, and uninstalling Skimkit deletes them.
Summaries and questions
When you click Summarize or ask a question, the transcript text of that video, its title and its channel name (and, for questions, your question and the earlier questions in that box) are sent over HTTPS to our server (skimkit.chpx.app), which asks OpenAI to write the answer and returns it to you. We do not store this text on our server and do not log it. OpenAI processes the request under its API terms, which do not allow using API data to train models. We never receive your watch history, your YouTube account or any other page content.
Open in ChatGPT or Claude
This button copies the transcript and a prompt to your clipboard and opens chatgpt.com or claude.ai. Nothing is sent until you paste it there yourself, under that service's own terms.
What we keep
- A random identifier for your installation, stored as a hash, used to check whether you bought Pro and to count summaries for the monthly limit.
- A hashed version of your IP address with a monthly counter, used only to stop abuse of the free summaries. It is deleted after about 40 days.
- If you buy Pro, your subscription status and a Stripe customer reference.
- Daily counters of whether loading a transcript worked, by method (for example "player: worked"), so we notice quickly when a YouTube change breaks Skimkit. They contain no video, page or user information and are deleted after 60 days.
Payments
Payments are processed by Stripe. Your card details and email are entered on Stripe's page and handled under Stripe's privacy policy.
Product analytics
To learn which features people use and where the upgrade path loses them, Skimkit records a few usage events, such as "a summary was made" or "started checkout". Each event holds the event name, the extension version, a short detail like the plan chosen, your country, and a one-way hash of your installation's random identifier. It never holds URLs, video titles, transcripts, page content, your name, email, IP address or payment details. The extension sends the events to our server, which forwards them to PostHog (US cloud, hosted in the United States). They are not used for advertising or shared with anyone else, and are kept for at most one year. You can turn them off in Skimkit's settings.
Service providers
OpenAI (writing summaries and answers), Stripe (payments), PostHog (product analytics) and our hosting providers process data for us only as described above.
What we do not do
- No ads and no tracking across other websites.
- We do not sell or share data, and we do not use it for advertising or to train AI models.
- The extension runs no remote code.
Your rights (GDPR / LGPD)
You can ask for access to, or deletion of, any data we hold about you by writing to support@chpx.io.
